CBBA takes a Victory Lap to Brisbane to hear from the best in the Sports Marketing World
Hello dear CBBA Community, it’s Denise here, your Marketing and Operations Manager. Last week, I took myself out of Kevin Betts Stadium and flew over to Brisbane to attend the Inaugural Victory Lap - Australia’s new Sports Marketing and Creative Summit.
I found myself in a room filled with industry professionals from Australia and New Zealand’s leading sporting teams, creative agencies and media outlets, it was honestly an honour to just be there representing CBBA.
The “not another sports conference” conference was held over two days and featured 19 speakers across international and local sporting leagues such as the NBA, WNBA, NRL, NFL and AFL. All the stories, insights, concepts and ideas that came from these legends of the game were incredibly inspiring!
I have never been more excited to take on a refreshed mindset into what’s next for the creative direction of the CBBA brand. Basically, we are going to continue to do what we have been doing but well, better.
I could spend hours speaking on the event but in typical short-form content way, here are my top five moments from Victory Lap:
Kerry McKenzie - All Blacks’s General Manager of Brand & Marketing
An insight into the marketing formula behind the iconic All Blacks brand with a focus on embracing the legacy, culture and pride of the club.
Shana Stephenson - WNBA New York Liberty’s Senior Vice President & Chief Brand Officer
A deep dive on her experience choosing to work in such a niche sports market in the biggest city in the world. Shana took us behind the scenes of how they shifted the Liberty experience to fit its new home in Brooklyn.
Dewayne Hankins - NBA Portland Trailblazers’ President, Business Operations
A tell-all on his journey from Social Media Admin to NBA Team President. To be honest, I was just simply amazed to be in a room with the man who helped bring Damian Lillard back to where he belongs.
Dr Sarah Wymer - Auckland University of Technology’s Senior Lecturer
A bit of a change of pace, however, one of the most relatable speakers in the conference. Dr Wymer spoke on her early findings around the current state of sport and digital media in Australia and New Zealand, highlighting how under-resourced the space is within the industry.
Dan Beltran - NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Creative Director
A breakdown of how to take elements of a city into rebuilding a brand. Dan took us step by step through the design process of taking inspiration from Tampa Bay into the Buccaneers creative.
A special shoutout to CBBA General Manager, Lachlan and the Board for allowing me this opportunity and to Sports Design Australia for organising an outstanding event that this industry definitely needed.
